We arrived in Berlin on June 21 at the height of World Cup fever. The electric energy in the air was stoked by outdoor cafes showing games on large screens to jolly audiences and flag-wearing fans and honking celebraters after every game. I admit to not doing much in the city since I was fretting a lot over an infected cut on my finger. Finally decided to brave the costs and wandered around two nearly deserted hospitals before winning an appointment with a joking dermatologist. He prescribed antibiotics and a local distinfectant while showing off his English and his sense of humor ("there are so many people without arms in Moscow!" and "don't drink this disinfectant or you'll turn yellow and people will think you're Chinese").
Tips from this visit: get 12 East German and Soviet stamps in your passport for €10 at Checkpoint Charlie. Have black currant ice cream in prosecco from a cafe on Unter der Linden. Enjoy moussaka at a Greek restaurant on Kufurstendamm. Make sure you have a valid ticket when riding the metro (last ride cost me €40).
Next time: Attend the film festival. Check out the artists' scene in East Berlin. Take less impersonal pictures.
